Report: Newcastle want Eddie Nketiah as Arsenal deal runs down

Newcastle want Eddie Nketiah, with the Daily Mirror reporting that the Magpies are one of six Premier League sides interested in signing the Arsenal striker.

For much of the season, it appeared inevitable that Nketiah would leave the Emirates this summer. His contract expires at the end of the season. And he spent much of the campaign on the periphery of Mikel Arteta’s plans.

However, the last few weeks have seen Nketiah’s stock rise considerably. He has scored four goals in his last five appearances, with Martin Keown labelling his display against Chelsea ‘magnificent’.

Arsenal however, face a battle to keep him. The 22-year-old is keen to secure regular game-time next season. And reports have claimed that he would like to join a club in the Champions League.

Arsenal are not planning to give up without a fight. The Daily Mirror reports that the Gunners are desperate to keep the striker. And they are prepared to dramatically increase his salary.

However, a number of teams want the forward. The Daily Mirror suggests that Newcastle are battling the likes of West Ham, Brighton and Crystal Palace for Nketiah. There is also a club in Germany monitoring his situation.

Newcastle want Eddie Nketiah

You could understand if a move to Newcastle appealed to Nketiah. Arsenal will surely sign at least one marquee forward this summer. And thus, he could find himself back down the pecking order.

Newcastle do have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood in their ranks. But Wilson has struggled to stave off the injuries during his time on Tyneside. And Wood has not exactly been prolific.

So there would be an opportunity for someone like Nketiah to make themselves a key man. And with the potential Newcastle now have, he may perhaps think it is the right move for his career – should he decide to leave Arsenal.
