Report: Newcastle want Diogo Costa; Porto stance on move could change
Newcastle United want Diogo Costa, with Eddie Howe having the Porto goalkeeper watched on international duty when Portugal faced Spain this week, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 72).
The Magpies are continuing their search for a new goalkeeper. For much of the window, it has seemed that Dean Henderson is their top target. Reports recently claimed that Newcastle were ready to offer £15 million for the England international.
However, it appears that they have other targets in mind. The Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 72) reports that Newcastle want Costa.
The report notes that he was scouted by the Magpies for Thursday’s Nations League encounter. And interestingly, Porto’s stance on a move has changed slightly.
The Sunday Mirror reports that the title-winners had been against selling the 22-year-old. However, they are now more open to the possibility – as long as an offer comes close to his £43 million buy-out clause.
Meanwhile, Costa is also prepared to consider his options. However, the Mirror suggests that Newcastle not being able to offer Champions League football will do them no favours.
Newcastle want Diogo Costa
Costa looks to have an incredibly bright future ahead. He has just enjoyed a real breakout year at Estadio do Dragao. He made 43 appearances for Porto in all competitions, winning goalkeeper of the month in Portugal’s top-flight five times.
Costa – who was actually born on the day Newcastle beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 in 1999 – kept 15 clean sheets in the league. And he managed two more in the Champions League.
Much may depend on Porto’s asking price. Henderson has the Premier League experience. And it seems that they would need to pay no more than £40 million to sign him from Manchester United.
So Howe may face a tricky decision. Signing Costa, at this stage, is potentially more of a gamble for the Magpies.
