Report: Newcastle want Conor Gallagher from Chelsea; move could depend on Joe Willock deal
Newcastle United could make a move for Chelsea midfielder, Conor Gallagher, with the club determined to sign an attacking midfielder.
Talks are continuing over a potential deal which will see Joe Willock return from Arsenal. The Magpies are said to be confident of signing the Gunners man, but have other options if needed.
One of those options is Gallagher, according to The Athletic. They report that Newcastle want two midfield players, with Gallagher an alternative to Willock.
Steve Bruce will also seek a more combative presence in the middle to go alongside one of Gallagher or Willock.
Gallagher enjoyed a good spell with West Brom last season. Despite being part of a relegated team, the Chelsea youngster still did well.
“He’s young, he can take balls, good in defending, he’s very calm on the ball, he’s energetic and he loves to get in the box. I’m really delighted with his contribution. He got a massive career in front of him. Massive,” Baggies boss Slaven Bilic said at the time.
Talent
Newcastle and Bruce will be buoyed by the form and performances of Willock last season. It was one of the biggest masterstrokes of his time at St James’.
Bruce, then, will no doubt see Gallagher as someone who could have a similar impact. Of course, he didn’t score the goals Willock did, but he is still a young player who can get box to box.
Willock is the main target. But if Newcastle can get Gallagher as an alternative, then Bruce will still be happy.
