Newcastle United are interested in taking Brandon Williams on loan during the January transfer window, according to the Chronicle.
Williams has played a peripheral role for Manchester United this season. And it may not surprise many of their supporters if he was allowed to leave temporarily next month.
He made 11 Premier League starts last season, with a further six appearances coming from the bench. So his lack of game-time this term is potentially doing him few favours.
And the Chronicle reports that Newcastle are interested in Williams. It is suggested that Steve Bruce’s relationship with those at Old Trafford means that any bid is likely to be seriously considered.
The Chronicle notes however, that Southampton also want the youngster. And his current club deem him to be a future star, so there is little chance of doing a deal that leaves the door open for a future permanent move.
TBR View: Williams loan makes a lot of sense for Newcastle
If Bruce is working with a tight budget in January, signing Williams on loan looks to make a lot of sense – for all parties, in fact.
He is capable of playing on either side of the defence. So he would provide competition in a number of roles. It looks to be a shrewd way to use one of the domestic loans available to the Magpies.
And having barely featured recently, Williams – who earns £65,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – will surely relish the chance to play regularly for a few months.
