Report: Newcastle want Aston Villa star if he becomes available

The Northern Echo have claimed that Newcastle United will look to lure Tammy Abraham away from Chelsea this summer, if the Blues are willing to offload the on-fire striker.

Abraham, 21, is currently on loan at Championship side Aston Villa, where his goals have been crucial to the Midlands outfit achieving a place in the top six of England’s second tier.

He has scored an enormous 25 goals in just 37 league games, and will be looking to add to that this weekend when Villa take on West Brom in the first leg of their play-off semi final.

Abraham’s future is up for debate, though, with Chelsea perhaps looking to keep the England Under-21 ace. That is because their transfer ban was enforced this week, meaning they cannot sign players until the end of 2019-20.

But it would mean the former Swansea City and Bristol City loanee would have to be given a chance ahead of Michy Batshuayi and Gonzalo Higuain, which looks unlikely while Maurizio Sarri is in charge.

TBR’s view

Signing Abraham on a permanent deal this summer or even on loan would be an excellent bit of business by Newcastle. Newcastle struggled for goals this season and extra fire power would be a huge plus.

But landing Abraham, and even potential interest in the striker could be worrying for fans in their pursuit of target man Salomon Rondon. If The Toon want Abraham, perhaps they are conceding defeat in the chase for Rondon.

Either striker would be a top addition, though it is unlikely that owner Mike Ashley would sign off on deals for both players.
