Report: Newcastle want £55k-a-week Premier League captain; deal could expire in 2022

Newcastle United have added another Burnley defender to their wishlist, with The Sun reporting that Eddie Howe is keen to sign Ben Mee as well as James Tarkowski.

The Magpies are off and running in the Premier League this season. They beat the Clarets 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to move level on points with their two rivals in the bottom three.

Crucially, they are within touching distance of safety. And that could well prove to be pivotal heading into the January transfer window.

You would imagine that they will find it easier to attract targets should they remain in the mix to stay up. And with that, they can keep their more ambitious targets on the radar.

The Sun reiterates that Newcastle want Kieran Trippier and Tarkowski. But the report adds that Mee has been added to the wishlist.

As things stand, the 32-year-old joins Tarkowski in being out of contract at Turf Moor this summer. However, Transfermarkt reports that there is an option to extend those terms by a year. And it is hard to imagine Burnley not taking that option up.

Mee would be an outstanding signing for Newcastle

Mee – who earns £55,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is approaching the twilight of his career. But he has been an amazing servant for Burnley, making over 360 appearances for the club.

And given that he will probably not cost a huge amount, it is not difficult to see why Howe may want him on Tyneside.

Interestingly, it was Howe who brought Mee to Burnley on a permanent basis back in 2012. He had previously signed him on loan for the club.

He is a leader, having captained Burnley for some time. And adding him to the ranks would surely make Newcastle a much more difficult side to break down.
