Newcastle United could be set to offer Phil Jones a Premier League lifeline by signing him from Manchester United.

According to a report from the Mirror, Jones can leave Old Trafford in the summer for a fee in the region of £12m.

And Newcastle boss, Steve Bruce, is apparently willing to take a chance on the 28-year-old.

Jones has seen his entire career with Man United pretty much wrecked by injury. The last few seasons have seen him be in and out of the team. Indeed, he’s made only two appearances for United this term.

With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof cemented as the regular centre-back pairing and Eric Bailly in reserve, Jones is somewhat surplus to requirements.

But with Newcastle reportedly interested, he could be handed a Premier League lifeline. The Magpies are more or less safe under the guidance of Bruce. That means planning for the summer can start taking shape.

It looks, then, as if Jones is one of the players Bruce has identified to help out his defence next season.

There’s no doubting Phil Jones has something about him. Sir Alex Ferguson gave him rave reviews when he first joined the club.

But things haven’t worked out. Jones himself would probably tell you he’s not quite fulfilled his potential even though he’s been at Old Trafford for around ten years now.

It seems to make little sense, then, for Steve Bruce to make his move. Newcastle have been built on solid foundations this season and that’s helped guide them to safety.

Bringing in a player who has missed so much time with injury could prove disastrous. Furthermore, Jones is bound to be one big wages. Indeed, according to Sportrac, Jones is on around £75k a week at Old Trafford.

Those sorts of numbers, added to his injury woes, make Phil Jones a high-risk signing for Bruce.
