Report: Newcastle United join Pau Lopez race, Tottenham recently linked
Italian newspaper Leggo have claimed that Newcastle United are interested in AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez ahead of the summer window – just days after Tottenham Hotspur were linked with bringing the Spaniard back to Spurs.
Lopez, 25, was loaned to Tottenham during the 2016-17 season as Mauricio Pochettino raided his former side Espanyol for the goalkeeper. However, he failed to make a single senior outing during his season-long loan.
It saw Pochettino opt against signing him permanently. Since then, Lopez has impressed for Real Betis and joined Roma last summer for £21million. He has since played 34 times, keeping nine clean sheets for the Italians.
Spanish website Estadio Deportivo claimed Tottenham Hotspur were interested in bringing Lopez back to England – while West Ham and Chelsea are also keen. Rated at £36million, Newcastle are now being linked.
TBR’s view – Is Lopez interest a hint Dubravka could leave?
If there was one area of the pitch Newcastle’s potential new owners do not need to improve, it is between the sticks. Martin Dubravka is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
Even if a takeover does go through and Newcastle’s new-look boardroom spend big, a goalkeeper is the last position the club need to improve upon. A striker, left-back, right-back, number 10 and a winger are more important.
But interest in Lopez suggests Dubravka could be on his way out – something which will concern Toon fans.
