Newcastle United have made contact over signing a highly-rated young South American striker, as per reports.
According to La Provincia, Gimnasia y Esgrima striker Jan Carlos Hurtado is on Newcastle’s radar ahead of the summer.
Hurtado currently plays for Gimnasia in the top-flight of Argentinian football but he is attracting attention from Europe.
Serie A side Atalanta hold an interest in Hurtado and have travelled to Argentina to hold talks with the young striker.
But they face competition from Newcastle. The Magpies have also made contact with Hurtado’s representatives and intend to make a ‘concrete offer’.
The Venezuela international could follow fellow countryman Salomon Rondon to St James’ Park this summer.

Hurtado and Rondon both play in attack for the Venezuelan national side, although Hurtado has the one cap to Newcastle loanee Rondon’s 72 caps.
Back in summer 2017, Hurtado was part of Venezuela’s under-20 squad for the 2017 U20 World Cup.
This ended in defeat in the final with Hurtado appearing as a late substitute against Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
But the pair could be team-mates next season as Newcastle ponder a bid. Hurtado has scored two league goals in 17 league games this season but Newcastle might take a gamble.
The 19-year-old is highly-rated as one for the future and Rondon might be able to advise on this deal for Newcastle.
