Report: Newcastle tried to sign Ozan Kabak, but move too expensive

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle have explored the possibility of signing Schalke defender Ozan Kabak this month – but the Turkey international has proved too expensive and The Toon are looking elsewhere.

Kabak, 20, has been an ever-present member of a Schalke side that are struggling in the top tier of German football this season. The former Galatasaray and Stuttgart defender has been linked with a move to England.

The Telegraph claimed in December that Liverpool were considering a move for Kabak – who is valued at £22million. Instead, the Reds look as though they are going to sign Preston defender Ben Davies for a bargain fee.

Newcastle are expected to be busy on Monday, but a move for Kabak now looks unlikely after being priced out of a move. The defender has a contract until the summer of 2024 at Schalke.

TBR’s view – Kabak would be a stunning signing

Despite failing to stop Schalke from conceding 38 goals in his 14 league appearances, Kabak is highly-rated and Schalke’s form is not put down to the Turkish defender. His name has been linked with numerous sides.

Good on the ball but an old-fashioned defender in that he is physical in the air and strong in the tackle. For most Premier League sides, at 20 years of age, he is a decent signing – but certainly one for the future.
