Report: Newcastle told Europa League winner will cost £7m, but Spaniard available for just £2m

The Mail’s Craig Hope claims that Newcastle would have to pay Villarreal £7million to get Unai Emery – but just £2million for Roberto Martinez.

Martinez and Emery are currently front runners for the Newcastle job, despite currently being employed by Villarreal and Belgium respectively.

Emery, of course, managed Arsenal before Mikel Arteta took over. Martinez has enjoyed spells with Swansea, Wigan and Everton in England.

But both are currently enjoying spells in management. Emery, after a tricky spell at Arsenal, won the Europa League with Villarreal last season.

Martinez is making Belgium one of the favourites for the 2022 World Cup. But he could be tempted to give that up to manage Newcastle.

Hope claims that both bosses could be available for a small-ish fee. Emery more than Martinez, but both are on the cheap – given Newcastle’s wealth.

Emery and Martinez: Which would be best for Newcastle?

Both managers have impressed when they have a limited budget. At Wigan and Swansea, Martined relied on his tactics and man management.

The Spanish gaffer then went to Everton where he had a bit more money, and ended up struggling – focusing more on recruitment.

Similarly, Emery is fighting with a smaller budget at Villarreal than he did at Arsenal – but is impressing far more as manager of the La Liga outfit.

So, on the face of things, would either be a good suit for Newcastle? In terms of calibre, both would be welcomed considerably on Tyneside.

But perhaps, they would be better-advised to go for a manager that is strong in the market and has experience of managing a side with bags of cash.
