Report: Newcastle to swoop for 25-year-old Shearer said 'can produce spectacular goals'

Newcastle United have set their sights on Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, according to talkSPORT.

The Magpies are reportedly ready to trigger the 25-year-old’s £17.5million release clause.

Newcastle are currently looking to bolster their attacking options further ahead of the new season.

And Eddie Howe reportedly believes Cornet could be a bargain buy for the Magpies.

The Ivory Coast international is available for £17.5million in wake of Burnley’s relegation from the top flight.

Cornet is a player in demand, but other clubs seem to be behind Newcastle in the race for his services.

As per talkSPORT, Everton saw a loan bid rejected, while Cornet failed to agree personal terms with Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea apparently considered a move for the wing-back, but haven’t firmed up their interest.

Newcastle would be getting a top talent in Cornet, and for a bargain price too.

His release clause is low by Premier League standards, and Burnley would be powerless to stop him from going.

Obviously there’s the issue of personal terms and wages, but Newcastle shouldn’t have any problem on that front.

Cornet is reportedly on £44,000-a-week at present.

At 25, he’s heading into his peak years, and his good displays for a struggling, defensive side last year highlighted his quality.

Back in January, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer correctly tipped Burnley to go down, but also praised Cornet.

“I’ve watched Burnley a few times in December and been really surprised at how poorly they’ve been defensively,” Shearer told Optus Sport, via The Mirror.

“I know they don’t concede as many as the other teams in the relegation battle do but then going forward they haven’t scored as much either.

“They’ve got Cornet, who can produce spectacular goals… So, I’m going to say Burnley, let’s hope that Newcastle are going to get out of it.”
