Report: Newcastle to spend just £50m in January transfer window

Newcastle United will not be splashing out huge amounts in the January transfer window, unless a player who PIF feel they can’t resist becomes available and is willing to move to Tyneside.

The Telegraph reports that the Magpies will spend around £50m in the January window. That’s a far cry from the figures just shy of the £200m mark that have been mentioned in recent days.

Newcastle are expected to make moves for players with value. James Tarkowski is mentioned in the report, owing to his contract being expired this summer.

However, The Telegraph writes that things could change. It’s suggested the spending will be dictated by PIF. And, crucially, if a player becomes available who they feel would be a marquee signing, then it will be considered.

Big names like Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane have been mentioned already. But both are unlikely at this stage, especially Kane.

Newcastle fans are preparing themselves for a big home clash today with Tottenham. There is expected to be a party atmosphere at St James’, with Mike Ashley now gone.

TBR’s View: Sensible January spending from Newcastle is right

The January market can be a rip off anyway. Clubs put a premium on players and you end up spending more than you normally would.

Newcastle’s strategy here sounds a good one. Buy a few players who can simply improve the squad now, and then move forward. The likes of Tarkowski are ideal.

In the summer, the Magpies can then really kick on. That’s when, in our opinion, you’ll see the big bucks spent.
