Report: Newcastle to offer Federico Fernandez new one-year deal

Newcastle United are planning to offer Federico Fernandez a new one-year contract, but The Sun on Sunday (7/2; page 60) hints that there may be a stumbling block for the Magpies to clear.

The 31-year-old has started 16 times in the Premier League this season. He has however, not been seen since the defeat to Sheffield United due to injury.

Nevertheless, it appears that Steve Bruce is keen to make sure that the Argentinian is in his ranks for next season.

According to The Sun on Sunday (7/2; page 60), Newcastle want to offer the centre-back a new one-year deal to stay on Tyneside.

However, Fernandez reportedly wants a two-year extension. And it is claimed that he would want to stay in the Premier League if an agreement cannot be reached.

Fernandez – who currently earns £47,300-a-week, according to Spotrac – would be 34 by the time a two-year deal comes to an end. But given that they are already willing to offer him terms for next year, it may be worthwhile for Newcastle to compromise.

He has been a regular fixture for Bruce’s side for the majority of the campaign. And replacing him with a new signing would presumably cost more than handing him a two-year contract.

It would certainly not go down well if he joined another Premier League side and proved to be a shrewd addition for the next two years off the back of Newcastle digging their heels in.
