Report: Newcastle target James Maddison not for sale this summer

Newcastle United are facing an uphill battle trying to get a deal agreed for James Maddison, with the Chronicle reporting that a senior Leicester City source has now claimed that Brendan Rodgers has insisted that he is not for sale.

Maddison appears to be the top name on the Magpies’ wishlist. Of course, it has been well-documented that they have now made two bids for the 25-year-old.

The Chronicle reports that the first offer was worth £40 million, while the second would have broken their club-record if accepted.

Their supporters may be hoping that they return with a fresh offer. Reports have previously suggested that Leicester want £60 million for Maddison. So there may be hope that a compromise could be reached.

However, it seems that the Foxes are now determined to make sure that Maddison goes nowhere. The Chronicle reports that a Leicester source has stressed to them that Rodgers is insistent that the England international is not for sale.

Maddison not for sale

Newcastle need to strengthen before the window shuts. And Maddison would be an ‘outstanding‘ signing.

Leicester need to sell before they can buy. And it does seem that selling Maddison would give Rodgers plenty to work with in the final weeks of the window.

However, there is speculation that Wesley Fofana could leave. And selling the defender would probably mean that they could hold onto Maddison.

The Foxes will also factor in how close the new season is. Replacing Maddison is going to be difficult enough. But doing it once the campaign begins is going to be even tougher.

So it may well be that reports of a £60 million asking price are now wide of the mark.
