Newcastle United want new hero Matty Longstaff and his brother Sean to sign new contracts, according to The Chronicle.

The Magpies are locked in talks with both of the Longstaff brothers and they will step up their attempts to keep them at the club. Newcastle are prioritising Matty’s deal but also want Sean to sign new and improved terms.

Matty is out of contract at the end of this season and he will be available to sign a pre-contract agreement with European clubs in January. After the 19-year-old marked his full debut with a winning goal against Manchester United, his stock has risen. This is why Newcastle are acting quickly.

Meanwhile, Sean has been in the public eye for a while now. The 21-year-old shone against the Red Devils, who reportedly want to sign him for £40m in January (as per The Daily Star).

Sean’s current deal lasts until summer 2022 as he signed fresh terms last season. But given Man United’s interest, Newcastle are planning to give their homegrown star a bumper new deal. Matty will be the main priority but Sean should follow soon after.

TBR’s view

This is sensible and prudent business by Newcastle; they need to protect their best young players from being poached. Man United have been sniffing around Sean and Matty will be attracting similar attention if he continues his rapid rise to stardom.

Both of the brothers seem grounded and they enjoyed playing together. They are local lads who grew up together supporting Newcastle. The Longstaffs could be long-term Newcastle stars.
