The Chronicle have claimed that Achraf Lazaar could be about to leave Newcastle United this summer and join Serie A side Fiorentina, which could link him up with veteran winger Franck Ribery.
Lazaar, 27, remains on the sidelines at Newcastle despite a decent spell on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season – where he worked under new Toon manager Steve Bruce. But that prior connection has not helped Lazaar.
The Morocco international is said to have jetted out to Italy earlier this month in order to secure a return to the top tier of Italian football. Lazaar played for Palermo before joining Newcastle, and had a loan spell with Benevento.
It is likely that the left-back is going to be left out of Newcastle’s 25-man squad for a second successive season, and Fiorentina are now weighing up a move. Since joining in the summer of 2016 for £2.9million (Chronicle), he has played just 10 times.
TBR’s view – If Lazaar joins Fiorentina, his agent deserves credit
Lazaar has flopped at Newcastle and though he is obviously remembered of fondly in Italian football following his time at Palermo, a Premier League outcast of his quality would surely be punching above his weight – if he joined Fiorentina.
Fiorentina had a difficult season last time around, but the calibre and rich history of the club is still large enough to bring in a player such as Ribery. If Lazaar gets to team up with the French winger, his agent deserves enormous praise.
