Newcastle United are reportedly planning to move for Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, according to a report in the Daily Record.
The 28-year-old hails from Newcastle and began his footballing journey at the Magpies’ academy before going on to start his professional career with Carlisle United.
Gillespie made 180 appearances for the Cumbrians between 2010 and 2017 before a season at Walsall and then a switch north of the border to Motherwell, where he has tallied up 67 appearances so far.

The Daily Record claims that Newcastle are keen to land their 6ft 1in former player and are set to tell the Scottish Premiership side of their intention to speak to the keeper, who will be out of contract in the summer.
The report adds that Steve Bruce is a fan of Gillespie as he wants an experienced keeper to provide competition to Martin Dubravka.
With Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot being out of contract in the summer and potentially leaving St James’ Park, there could be a need for the Magpies to bolster their ranks in between the sticks.
TBR View:
With Newcastle’s takeover appearing to edge ever closer, there is now increasing optimism on Tyneside about their beloved club, which has sadly been punching below its weight for years now.
Although some may be dreaming of multimillion acquisitions, there are some great players out there who could soon be available for nothing, and Gillespie is one such player.
A highly-rated keeper previously described as “terrific” by Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson and “outstanding” by former Carlisle manager Greg Abbott, he may well feel he has unfinished business at Newcastle.
