Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Kyle Scott, according to The Northern Echo. Scott is set to join Newcastle on a three-year deal following his release by Chelsea.
But it was former manager Rafa Benitez who kickstarted this transfer move. Benitez is a big fan of Scott and set the wheels in motion for this deal to take place.
Benitez reportedly started negotiations with the player about a move to St James’ Park. But shortly after, he departed after the club failed to match his ambition.
While Benitez is in China with Dalian Yifang, Newcastle are pressing ahead with this Scott deal. And the USA U20 international is edging closer to becoming a Newcastle player.
Scott has been a regular for Chelsea’s youth sides over the past few years but has never made a first-team appearance. His only taste of senior football came during a loan spell at Telstar in Holland last season.
Kyle Scott: Potential solution in midfield?
Newcastle could be looking for a new long-term option in central midfield if exit-linked duo Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden leave. But is Scott the right man for the job?
The 21-year-old is young and promising but his lack of experience will be the initial concern for Newcastle. He scored twice in 14 games for Telstar last season but there is a big jump from the Dutch second tier to the Premier League.
Scott might not be ready for first-team football just yet but Newcastle fans will trust Benitez’s judgement. If Benitez wanted the young central midfielder, he must have some talent.
