Report: Newcastle now aiming to sign £296,000-a-week star, Alan Shearer has called him a total 'genius'
Newcastle United have had a rollercoaster of a transfer window, and there’s still five days left before it closes.
From the highs of landing Kieran Trippier to the lows of several seemingly fruitless sagas, Magpies fans have experienced it all these past few weeks.
Now, one report has come out linking Newcastle to someone who’s very much the definition of marquee player.
According to BILD’s Christian Falk, the Magpies are eyeing Bayern Munich and Germany legend Thomas Muller.
The journalist claims both Newcastle and Everton ‘want’ the 32-year-old forward.
Muller is out of contract with Bayern in 2023 and is yet to sign an extension.
If he doesn’t pen fresh terms, his club will have to make a decision in the summer – cash in or risk losing him for nothing.
This would be quite the statement signing from Newcastle if they were to pull it off.
Muller has sealed his place in football folklore, winning a gargantuan 29 trophies with Bayern and, of course, the 2014 World Cup.
The £296,000-a-week star has clocked up over 600 competitive appearances with Bayern, registering 223 goals and 238 assists.
And Muller’s Germany tally reads 110 caps, 42 goals and 40 assists.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has previously sung the player’s praises, deeming him as effective as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Muller’s goal scoring record is superb,” he told BBC Sport – as transcribed by the Daily Star – in 2016.
“His finishing is absolutely superb. He is a genius at finding and making space for himself.
“He might not be as sexy as Messi and Ronaldo but he is as effective.”
