Report: Newcastle want to sign Serie A striker with 'startling' dribbling ability, £20m price tag
Newcastle United are reportedly considering a swoop for Argentina international Joaquin Correa.
The Magpies are looking to bolster their ranks in order to build on last season’s 11th-placed Premier League finish.
Meanwhile, Correa may well be surplus to requirements at Inter Milan.
The 27-year-old joined the Nerazzurri on a loan deal with obligation to buy from Lazio last summer.
Correa, a versatile attacker, registered 48 goal contributions from 117 appearances for the Biancocelesti.
However, he failed to live up to initial expectations at the San Siro. Sadly, he failed to translate his Lazio form in black and blue.
Correa ended last season with just six goals and two assists to his name.
He also spent time on the sidelines due to hamstring issues.
Now, several Italian outlets are suggesting that Newcastle are circling Correa.
Calciomercato has claimed that the Magpies have entered the race and are ‘strongly’ looking for a new striker.
There have also been links between Marseille and Correa, but they’ve apparently cooled their interest, added the outlet.
Meanwhile, Corriere della Sera has reported that Newcastle have been keeping the Argentine in their thoughts.
Inter are going to have to sell one of their attackers if they are to bring in Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku whilst also keeping Lautaro Martinez, they added.
Inter are reportedly willing to accept a bid of €25million (around £20million) for Correa.
And Gazzetta dello Sport – via Sport Witness – claims that, regarding interest in Correa, ‘English sirens are heard’ .
Apparently, they’re not from the established elite Premier League clubs, but more those ‘with wallets full of pounds’.
‘Above all, the wealthy Newcastle could make a move for the Argentine’, added the report.
“Extremely technically gifted”
Correa had a tough season last time out. Even though Inter have an obligation to buy, they could well sell him almost immediately.
However, this could play into Newcastle’s hands. They’d have the chance to sign a superb player whose stock has fallen, and get him firing on all cylinders again.
In July last year, 90Min wrote an in-depth scouting article about Correa.
They labelled him a ‘big-game player’, a ‘lucky charm’, a ‘dribbling artist’, ‘the perfect foil’, and a ‘flexible’ forward who provides ‘consistent deliveries’.
“In terms of what he delivers on the pitch, Correa is extremely technically gifted,” they wrote.
“The forward plays just off the main striker, occupying the space both in front of and behind his partner, giving opposition defenders plenty to think about.
“He is a real live wire. And relishes the opportunity to size up his marker and dart beyond him with a shimmy and a neat piece of footwork.
“His dribbling ability is startling, as Merih Demiral found out earlier (in 2020-21).
“One moment he was keeping a close eye on the swiftly advancing Correa, and the next he was gone.
“A step-over and a drop of the shoulder was enough to floor one of the most talked about defenders in Serie A. Scary stuff!”
