Newcastle United have reportedly expressed a serious interest in Nuno Tavares, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
The report claims that the Magpies are eyeing the Benfica left-back, who has enjoyed a great campaign in the Primeira Liga thus far.
Other clubs are said to be eyeing Tavares, including Premier League rivals Burnley and Italian outfit Napoli.
However, Newcastle are showing a more “intense” interest in the 21-year-old at present, according to the report.
Benfica could look to cash in on their £13million-rated asset in the summer, particularly if they miss out on qualification for the Champions League.
Earlier this year, agent Cesar Boaventura spoke about Tavares amid links to Manchester United.
He is quoted by talkSPORT as saying: “This player can play for any club in Europe. But right now he can’t. He has to learn and grow.
“He’s a fast player, one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league.
“He’s young. Maybe he’s not a player ready for a big one. But he could be in the future. Within a couple of years. He can become one of the best in Europe.”
Tavares is a great young prospect who has already clocked up 36 senior appearances for Benfica, including in the Europa League, and looks set for an exciting future.
If Newcastle survive in the Premier League and would like to provide competition at left-back amid a difficult start for Jamal Lewis, then Tavares sounds like a great shout.
