Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte have claimed that Newcastle United have sent head of recruitment Steve Nickson to Brazil to watch Vasco da Gama striker Marrony.
Still just 20 years of age, Marrony has broken into the Vasco first team of late, clocking up 22 appearances in all competitions for the senior side. He has played on both flanks and up front for the Brazilian side.
The report claims that Newcastle are winning the race for the Brazilian ace, who has more than four years remaining on his current contract – which expires in December 2023. But they are not alone in pursuing Marrony.
It is also claimed that Sporting Lisbon are interested in the versatile attacker, but it is claimed that Sporting’s interest has only reached monitoring the player. Newcastle are more serious about a deal for the attacker.
Vasco have included a clause in his contract that will allow the attacker to leave if a bid of £31.5million is made, but it remains to be seen if Vasco will be willing to accept a figure lower than that sum.

TBR’s view – Marrony promising, but Newcastle should avoid
Newcastle have a limited amount of funds to spend on players this summer and are set to bring in the hugely impressive Joelinton this summer from German side Hoffenheim for around £36million.
Marrony has enormous potential too, but with Joelinton more proven at the senior level, he is worth spending the money on. With a budget in place, Newcastle need players that can offer immediate results.
Marrony is not a player that has the odds stacked in his favour when it comes to hitting the ground running, given his age and lack of experience. To splash £31.5million, an enormous chunk of the budget, on an unproven player, would be reckless.
