Report: Newcastle see £35m bid for Edson Alvarez rejected by Ajax
Newcastle United have made a £35 million bid for Edson Alvarez, but the Sunday Mirror (21/8; page 65) reports that Ajax have rejected the offer from the Magpies.
Ajax, of course, have lost a number of key players in this window, with Lisandro Martínez one of those to leave the club. And obviously, the Eredivisie champions also had to replace Erik ten Hag.
And with that, it seems that the Dutch side were in no mood to lose yet another important member of the squad.
The Sunday Mirror (21/8; page 65) reports that Newcastle made a £35 million bid for Alvarez. And it is claimed that Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the Mexico international.
However, Ajax have turned down the approach from the Magpies. It is suggested that the bid was not enough to convince the club to let Alvarez move to the Premier League.
It is not yet clear whether Newcastle plan to make a fresh offer in the coming days.

Alvarez would be an exciting signing for Newcastle. He can play as a centre-back and holding midfielder. And Lisandro Martínez recently lauded him as a ‘fantastic‘ person following the Argentinian’s move to Manchester United.
Alvarez is exceptional in possession, rarely giving the ball away. And he also works incredibly hard to win it back. He is also rarely beaten in the air.
It arguably says a lot that Newcastle are pursuing a deal for Alvarez. They have been shrewd with their spending so far this summer. And they desperately need further reinforcements in the final third.
So offering £35 million for Alvarez highlights just how highly Howe rates the 24-year-old. Unfortunately for Newcastle, they are going to need to offer more to agree a deal.
