The Chronicle has identified two strikers on Newcastle’s January shortlist, after Callum Wilson suffered an injury. Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo is being monitored, while Gabriel Barbosa is a long-term target.
Wilson, 29, is set to be sidelines for months – after picking up a calf problem against Manchester United. It is believed the England international could have torn his calf during the 1-1 draw on Monday night.
Eddie Howe will have to bring in a striker – and Luton ace Adebayo is being scouted by the Toon. The London-born 23-year-old is on fire, scoring 10 goals in 20 Championship goals for Nathan Jones’ side this season.
Newcastle have eyes on the 6ft 4in striker. But he is not the only striker the Toon want, with 25-year-old Barbosa also on Steve Nickson’s radar. The £40million-rated (Mirror) ace scored 29 goals for Flamengo during 2021.

It is believed that Nickson has been watching Brazil international Barbosa for the last three years. However, interest in Barbosa is rife – with numerous Premier League clubs said to be looking at the Brazilian.
Adebayo and Barbosa: Newcastle desperately need to move quickly
The Toon cannot wait until the end of the January window to bring in a striker. Losing Wilson is a blow. Joelinton is next in line, but he has been superb in midfield – shining since the arrival of Howe.
Dwight Gayle is also an option but realistically, he needs to leave the club – while Allan Saint-Maximin is best from the left. Whether it is Barbosa, Adebayo or another striker, he must be signed in the coming days.
