Report: Newcastle rivalling Leicester for Shakhtar Donetsk superstar Tete

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte have claimed that Newcastle United and Leicester City have both made contact over a move to sign Shaktar Donetsk winger Tete – who could cost a whopping £61million.

Just 20 years of age, Tete joined Shakhtar just over a year ago from Brazilian side Gremio – a route taken by many Brazilian talents including Chelsea ace Willian. He has since starred for the Ukranian giants.

The Brazil Under-20’s burgeoining reputation has continued to soar, even on the Champions League stage – netting in a 3-3 draw with Dinamo Zagreb this season. In 36 Shakhtar appearances, he has scored nine and created seven.

Given his potential, Tete has enormous resale value and the talent to become a world beater. That has seen Newcastle and Leicester make contact over a move, while AC Milan and Roma are also said to be in talks for the winger.

TBR’s view – Is Tete worth Newcastle smashing transfer record?

There is no doubt that Tete is going to be a top, top player and his form for Shakhtar at such a young age is more than impressive. But is it worth spending more than £60million? Probably not.

To adapt to the physical rigours of the Premier League is difficult, not least for a youngster with the huge weight of such a big price tag. Newcastle would be much better off landing the likes of Willian or Dries Mertens, rather than Tete.
