Report: Newcastle ready to submit bid for 'phenomenal' World Cup striker

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘ready’ to make a bid for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram.

This is according to Tuttojuve (via Sport Witness), who speculate that the Magpies are ‘not a bad option’ for the France international.

Thuram has been in the form of his life this season.

The 25-year-old has an impressive 13 goals and four assists from just 17 appearances in all competitions this term.

This has helped him win a place in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Better still for the likes of Newcastle, Thuram’s contract expires at the end of the season.

This means he could be available for a bargain price in January and for nothing in the summer.

Numerous clubs have been linked with Thuram, and Tuttojuve has now named Newcastle as potential suitors.

Apparently the Magpies ‘break through’ in the race for the Frenchman and are ‘ready to make a bid’ of €11.5m (£10m) for his services.

They state the forward ‘has no intention’ of signing a new deal at Gladbach and instead intends to sign a big contract with someone else.

His contract situation, combined with the prospect of a bidding war, means he could demand more from any potential buyers.

That is something Newcastle can offer him given their wealth. Therefore, they are ‘not a bad option’ for the forward at this moment in time.

Eddie Howe could certainly do with bolstering his attacking ranks, and Thuram is a decent option who wouldn’t break the bank.

Newcastle target Marcus Thuram – style of play

As with most Bundesliga players, the official league website does a great job of providing analysis on their players.

“Thuram may be slightly taller than (Anthony Martial) and possess a bulkier frame, but that makes him no less dangerous than his fellow Frenchman of Guadeloupean descent,” they wrote last year.

“Indeed, he has made France’s Euro 2020 squad ahead of him.

“Quick, direct and with the upper body strength to brush opponents out of the way, the sight of Gladbach’s new man running at you is enough to make any defender reconsider their profession.”

Newcastle could potentially land a player who Arsene Wenger compared to Thierry Henry for a bargain fee.

Wenger told Der Spiegel two years ago: “Thierry Henry had the timing of the smartest footballers.

“He was also very strong physically, and technically he could do everything.

“In fact, there’s a player in the Bundesliga who reminds me of him – Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach.”

Meanwhile, Dennis Zakaria praised Thuram in 2019 after he scored a late winner against Roma in the Europa League.

“It was so important that Marcus scored that goal today,” said Zakaria, via Bulinews.

“He is a great guy, a little crazy maybe, but what he brings to the pitch is phenomenal.”
