Report: Newcastle ready to make 'absolute top' midfielder their highest earner at St James' Park
Newcastle United have reportedly launched a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara.
The Magpies are finally able to flex their financial muscles this month as they look to bolster their ranks.
Newcastle have already signed Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window, and Chris Wood is likely up next.
Eddie Howe could certainly do with some more quality at central midfield too.
And Haidara would definitely fit the bill for Newcastle as they look to grow in stature over the coming years.
According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies expect to pay a total £80million for the 23-year-old.
This would include wages, and the outlet claims Haidara has salary expectations of £160,000-a-week.
Newcastle would be making the Mali international their highest earner in this case.
Haidara reportedly has a release clause of around £33million that becomes active in the summer.
Newcastle would have to pay more than that figure to persuade Leipzig to sell their player in January, added the outlet.
Haidara has been at Leipzig since 2019, racking up almost 100 appearances, and has a contract until 2025.
He has also won 25 caps for his country and is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Ralf Rangnick – currently at Manchester United and formerly of Leipzig – is a huge fan of Haidara.
Metro quotes him as saying in 2019: “We have another absolute top player on our hands, I’ve known [that] for a while.”
