Report: Newcastle preparing £17m offer for 'unbelievable' attacking talent who's a manager's dream

Newcastle United are plotting a swoop for Braga attacking talent Roger Fernandes, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese outlet – via Sport Witness – claims the Magpies are ‘willing to open the purse strings’ for the 16-year-old.

Despite his young age, Fernandes has already made 10 first-team appearances for Braga, scoring three goals.

The teenage prodigy made the step up to Braga’s first-team squad last year.

Fernandes played in the Europa League, Primeira Liga and several Under-23 competitions.

Newcastle are just one of several clubs trying to sign the youngster, claimed the A Bola report.

The Portuguese side have reportedly turned down proposals from Ajax and Borussia Dortmund already.

Now, it is Newcastle’s turn to ‘position themselves’ in an attempt to secure his signature.

The Magpies are ‘willing to open the purse strings’ and make an initial offer of €20m (£17m).

This could reach €25m (£21.4m) if certain targets are met, added the report.

Admittedly – and understandably – Braga are not particularly interested in selling the youngster.

However, Newcastle’s arguments may ‘speak louder’ than previous proposals they’ve received.

There is also the possibility that Newcastle would sign the player and then allow him to stay in Braga to continue his development.

“Something special”

In November last year, then Braga manager Carlos Carvalhal spoke to Sky Sports about Fernandes.

He shared a story of the youngster’s incredible attitude and maturity when it came to preparing for a friendly.

“One day, I had a problem with my left winger Galeno,” said the former Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday boss.

“And so I went to those responsible for the academy and asked if they had a player in this position.

“They said, ‘Coach, I want you to see this boy.’ So I brought him up to play in a friendly game.

“When doing my analysis notes after the game to correct the boy, there was something that I did not understand.

“This boy was doing everything that we had requested for this position.

“I wanted to correct something but I had nothing. Absolutely zero.

“It was unbelievable. I know football. This is not normal.

“I asked him the next day, ‘Where did you learn this? Who taught you? This is a complex position.’

“He told me that he watched all of Braga’s games and when he had been told that he would play as a left winger, he spent all that day watching videos of Galeno.

“He had studied his movements in the offensive phase, defensive phase and the transition.

“Wow. At 15 years old, this was something special.

“The modern young player does not like to watch full games but this boy had done all that he could to learn this position.”
