Report: Newcastle prepared to pay big money for Jesse Lingard in January

According to reports this weekend, Newcastle United are desperate to sign Jesse Lingard and will make the Manchester United man their top earner in January.

The Times claims that Newcastle have made Lingard their number one priority signing. The Magpies will pay Lingard more than the £100k-a-week that Miguel Almiron earns, and are even willing to give Manchester United a big fee in January, despite him being available on a free in the summer.

Lingard has failed to feature prominently for United this term. This, despite excelling at West Ham last season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer convincing him to stay at Old Trafford. Now, though, there is no sign of a new deal being agreed and Lingard looks to be on his way out.

The Times claims Lingard has been offered a four and a half year deal by Newcastle. Lingard, 28, is a seasoned international and has 32 caps for England. He’s also played 221 games for Manchester United, scoring 35 times along the way.

Eddie Howe’s side got their first win of the season yesterday. It’s given the club a boost, and they’ll now hope to be able to flex their financial muscle in January and add Lingard – and more – to the squad.

TBR’s View: Newcastle need a Jesse Lingard to stay up

Any player who goes to Newcastle now is going either for the big money, or because they genuinely believe the squad will stay up and kick on next year. But to do so, the club needs top players. And Lingard is a top player.

If PIF can get a deal done for the Manchester United star then it could open the floodgates. Other players might see the risk Lingard has taken and follow suit. At least, the Toon Army will be hoping that is the case!

Nonetheless, if Newcastle sign Lingard, then their chances of survival immediately increase.
