Report: Newcastle prepare £21m offer for 6ft 2in Bundesliga centre-back, Alaba comparisons
Newcastle United have reportedly prepared a £21million offer for Felix Uduokhai.
The Magpies are currently eyeing a new centre-back after landing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
Newcastle have been linked with Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile in recent weeks.
However, Tuttomercatoweb has now thrown Uduokhai’s name into the mix.
The outlet claims Newcastle have made ‘important’ contact for the FC Augsburg powerhouse.
The Magpies reportedly have 25m euro (£21million) ready to spend on Uduokhai.
In addition, Napoli are also eyeing the 6ft 2in ace, added TMW.
Uduokhai has made 62 appearances for his club since joining in 2020 for a reported £6.3million.
His efforts culminated in him earning a call-up to the Germany squad for their November 2021 World Cup qualifiers.
The Bundesliga website has compared Uduokhai to Bayern Munich and Austria star David Alaba.
“There are very few left-footed centre-backs at the highest level right now, and so Uduokhai is a rare gem in that sense,” they wrote.
“The Augsburg defender has also played at left-back and in defensive midfield during his career already, but his home is in the centre of defence.
“Comfortable with both feet, the 23-year-old lines up on the left side of Augsburg’s central pairing to get the best use of his preferred foot.
“That’s his key comparison to Bayern Munich’s Alaba, as well as his comfort in playing out from the back.
“What makes Uduokhai a little different is that he stands 6’2″, making him a real presence at the back and at the other end of the pitch with his size and aerial ability.”
Newcastle better off going for rising stars at modest clubs – TBR View
The January transfer window is a tricky time to do business as many clubs don’t want to part with key players mid-season.
In addition, Newcastle are currently battling for Premier League survival, which complicates things further.
However, going for hidden gems from modest clubs is certainly the right way to go about things.
Augsburg are themselves fighting relegation, so a big-money offer from a Premier League club could tempt both club and player.
