In August 2021, Newcastle United signed Santiago Munoz on an 18-month loan deal with option to buy from Mexican outfit Santos Laguna.
Many Magpies fans did a double take – in the 2005 movie Goal!, a fictional Mexican player called Santiago Munez joined the St James’ Park club.
But while Munez made a name for himself at Newcastle in the movie, Munoz has sadly not managed to scale those same heights.

Now, according to Mexico’s Futbol Total – via Sport Witness – the 20-year-old will leave the Tyneside outfit soon.
Apparently, Newcastle have no interest in buying Munoz on a permanent basis.
He has been playing for the Under-23s but has ‘been unable to make a name for himself’ at the club.
And with the Magpies not wanting to sign Munoz permanently, Los Laguneros ‘expect’ him to report to them on 22nd November, when they begin pre-season training.
The young Mexican’s ambition was to stay in Europe. However, his chances of doing so are ‘slim’ at present, as Newcastle have not contacted Santos about a move.

While it’s a shame that Munoz hasn’t been able to make a significant impact at Newcastle, he’s still young and has his whole career ahead of him.
As a youth international, he scored five goals as Mexico won the Concacaf Under-17 Championships in 2019.
He then made his club debut for Santos Laguna and scored three goals in 13 league games, registering three assists.
Munoz definitely has what it takes to shine, and if he does well back at his parent club, it could put him in the shop window again.
