Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for CSKA Moscow defender Mario Fernandes.
According to the Mirror, the Magpies are plotting a club-record £26.4million swoop for the right-sided flyer.
It is understood that the Russia international is viewed as an upgrade on the current right-back options at St James’ Park.
The report details that Atletico Madrid could also be keen on the 28-year-old, but Newcastle are prepared to act quickly to try wrap up a deal this summer quickly for him.
Fernandes has enjoyed a great season with CSKA Moscow, where he’s been a hit in the right wing-back role and he got to play in the Champions League group stages.
He’s made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Russian giants this campaign and his tally of nine assists shows his attacking qualities.
The wide man has a tremendous work-rate too that sees him bomb up and down the flank in games.
DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo are decent options at right-back for Newcastle, but they would be taking it up a level if they manage to bring CSKA’s full-back to St James’ Park.
He really made a name for himself with some eye-catching displays in last summer’s World Cup with hosts Russia, while he’s continue that kind of form for his club side in the last year too.
Fernandes has all the traits needed for a modern day wing-back and should fit in nicely to Newcastle’s system under Rafael Benitez if the pair are both in the North East next season.
Magpies fans are keen to see the club be ambitious in the transfer market and this is the type of signing that would please them if it comes true.
