Report: Newcastle open talks to sign Nabil Fekir from Betis

French website Foot Mercato says Newcastle United have opened talks with the agents of Real Betis star Nabil Fekir, ahead of the January window.

Fekir, 28, has entered the final two years of his contract at Real Betis. While he has stated he is happy in Andalusia, Newcastle have opened talks.

The 25-time France international was linked with Newcastle during the first takeover bid in 2020. But a takeover failed, and a move dissipated.

Now, the takeover is complete and a move for Fekir is back on the cards. The report claims that Newcastle have Fekir on their initial shortlist.

Newcastle have opened talks to land Fekir, by speaking to the player’s agents. Fekir was part of France’s squad that won the World Cup in 2018.

Of course, Fekir is an attacking midfielder in a similar ilk to Toon icon Hatem Ben Arfa. He once said he idolised the ex-Newcastle star.

“Ben Arfa inspired me. He was playing in Lyon, I saw what he was doing, it was wonderful. I tried to follow his example,” Fekir told FM in 2018.

Newcastle eye Fekir: A showboat signing, but is he what they need?

At Lyon, Fekir was incredible. Captaining the side, he had 115 goal involvements in 193 league and cup appearances – scoring 69.

But at Betis, he has failed to replicate that form. This season, he has two goals and two assists in 10 games. Just 29 involvements in 81 Betis games.

His form has dipped. Right now, Newcastle need battlers. Players that can help them climb out of a relegation battle. Players that work hard.

Does Fekir do that? Or is he more of a Rolls Royce player? It is probably the latter. He would be good for Newcastle, when they climb up the table.
