Report: Newcastle open talks to sign Leicester defender

French site RMC Sport claim via GFFN – Newcastle have opened talks to sign Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana – and an offer is forthcoming.

Fofana, 20, is currently on the sidelines with a long-term ligament injury, which required surgery in the summer. He is out until 2022.

However, when fit enough, the new report claims that Newcastle will make Leicester an offer in a surprise move. It is unclear how much he would cost.

The report states that Newcastle’s new owners have spoken to the player’s entourage, and have made Leicester aware they will bid when he is fit.

Fofana, of course, made a brilliant start to life in the Premier League last season. Joining the club from St. Etienne, he cost a huge £36.5m (Guardian).

Since then, he has played 38 times for Leicester – in a back two or three – and instantly became one of the club’s best, outshining Caglar Soyuncu.

Newcastle eye Fofana: Owners want to sign a big-name defender

While it is unapparent if the likes of Amanda Staveley have even discussed transfers just yet – it is quite clear they want to sign a centre-back.

Just today, Newcastle have been linked with big names including Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet, Juve’s Matthijs de Ligt and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Fofana is slightly different from those in that he is still only 20 – and is yet to be playing for one of Europe’s biggest. He is likely to cost a fortune.

Throw in he cost £36.5m, and that Newcastle’s new owners can afford anything – a fee could go well past the £50million mark for Fofana.
