Portuguese outlet O Jogo have claimed that Newcastle United are one of five clubs interested in Guangzhou Evergrande midfielder Nemanja Gudelj, but his big wages are having a say in the matter.
The 27-year-old is currently earning an enormous £86,000 a week with the Chinese Super League side, despite spending the 2018-19 season on loan at Sporting Lisbon.
Sporting are one of the five sides interested in the 22-time Serbia international, who has shone in Portugal for the title challengers. Indeed, he clocked up 43 appearances in all competitions last season.
Now, with Guanghzou boasting four non-Chinese players in their squad including former Tottenham star Paulinho and ex-Everton defender Tyias Browning, there is no space for Gudelj to return.
Sporting cannot afford his wages on a permanent basis, and that leaves Gudelj on the lookout for a new home. The report claims Newcastle, Real Betis, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are all interested in his signature.
Newcastle could certainly do with another central midfielder after Mo Diame left the club on a free transfer. Doubts remain over the futures of Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff, the latter being linked with Manchester United.
Gudelj is the kind of reliable player that will give you a solid 7/10 every week. He goes about his business calmly at the base of the midfield, oozing class, reading the game with intelligent and anticipation.
He is the perfect blanket to have in front of the defence and would be somewhat of a coup if Newcastle could land him. But with competition from clubs all over Europe, it may be difficult to land his signature.
