Newcastle United are reportedly on the verge of signing Peruvian attacking midfielder Rodrigo Vilca, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that the Magpies are closing in on a £250,000 deal for the Deportivo Municipal prospect, who has been called up to the Peru national squad by coach Ricardo Gareca.
It is also believed that Newcastle could loan Vilca out for experience to begin with as they feel he may lack the physical capabilities to feature in the Premier League at present.
The 21-year-old has come through the ranks at the Lima-based club, being promoted to the senior setup in 2018, and has made 26 competitive appearances so far.
In 2020, Vilca has made 10 senior appearances for Municipal, registering an impressive three goals and three assists.
His contract runs until 2021 and, speaking to Depor late last month, he said: “Now I owe myself to my club, but at the end of the year we will see what is best for my career.”
Newcastle have enjoyed a fruitful transfer window so far, with Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick and Mark Gillespie all bolstering the ranks significantly.
Vilca isn’t expected to challenge for a first-team place just yet but his impressive stats for Municipal, as well as a Peru call-up despite his young age, paint a picture of an extremely talented player with a lot of potential.
