Report: Newcastle offered Memphis Depay - and talks are imminent

Newcastle United have become the latest club to be offered the chance to sign Memphis Depay, with Sport claiming that the Magpies are very interested in the Barcelona star.

Depay is out of contract at Camp Nou in the summer after only penning a two-year deal when he arrived.

The Dutchman finished his first season with the Catalan giants as joint top-goalscorer. And yet, it appears that Barca are not against the idea of selling him in January.

Sport claims that Barcelona could let him go next month for as little as £9 million. And it seems that St James’ Park may be his next destination.

According to Sport, Newcastle have just been offered Depay. And it turns out that Eddie Howe is very keen on signing the 28-year-old having also wanted him in the summer.

In fact, Sport adds that representatives from Newcastle will try and convince Depay into a move in the coming days. Previously, the forward had been reluctant to leave Catalonia in the January window.

Depay has a point to prove in the Premier League after an underwhelming spell at Manchester United. But he would have the potential to be a very impressive signing for the Magpies.

Depay has been ‘world-class‘ since leaving Old Trafford. He is his country’s talisman. And he did fairly well for Barca following his switch.

He will also command a relatively small transfer fee. Obviously, he is likely to demand hefty wages – particularly if he is reluctant to leave Barcelona before his contract expires – but Newcastle clearly have the funds.

Howe’s men look to be well ahead of schedule. There is an opportunity to achieve something really significant this season.

Signing Depay would appear to be a gamble to many. But if Howe is keen, it is surely a deal that supporters would quickly get on board with.
