Report: Newcastle now want Ligue 1 striker who has scored more goals than Mbappe and Neymar
According to a report from Le10 Sport, Newcastle United are interested in signing Lille star Jonathan David in January.
The Magpies are expected to be very active in the winter window. The new owners have raised the expectations in and around St James’ Park, and fans are now looking forward to seeing how good the recruitment will be.
Eddie Howe currently has Joelinton and Callum Wilson up top. The Magpies boss knows the latter very well, but if the report is to be believed, Newcastle are keen to sign another striker very soon.
The report claims that Newcastle have already made their intentions known to Lille about a move for David in the coming weeks.
Newcastle-linked Jonathan David has scored more goals than Mbappe and Neymar
Since joining Lille from Gent last year, David has become a real star in Ligue 1.
After an impressive debut campaign that saw him score 13 goals and provide five assists, David’s scoring rate has improved drastically. He has already scored nine goals this season, more than the league’s three best players – Kylian Mbappe (6), Neymar (3) and Lionel Messi (3).
That is a very impressive return for a 21-year-old and it is no surprise that Newcastle are interested in his services ahead of the January transfer window.
Lille have to sell
Despite winning the league title last season, Lille are in desperate need of money. They will have to sell their best players to raise funds and David could well be sacrificed as a result.
The report claims that Newcastle are really keen but they aren’t the only ones in the race to sign him. Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are also looking at David, which complicates things for the Magpies.
However, the new owners are looking to make a statement in the coming windows and beating PSG and Inter to a player will certainly be a big one. However, it’s easier said than done.
