Report: Newcastle now set to sign 'outstanding' player before Ekitike, he's desperate to join

Newcastle United are now close to signing England international goalkeeper Nick Pope from relegated Burnley.

The Telegraph report that the Magpies are closing in on the 30-year-old after the Clarets dropped into the Championship.

Pope has got himself back into the England squad and will have his sights set on the World Cup later this year.

To get into Gareth Southgate’s party for that tournament, he is likely to need to be playing first team football in the Premier League.

Newcastle close to signing Pope

The report says that Pope is desperate to sign for Newcastle, and that the deal is likely to cost between £8 and £10 million.

There are targets who have been on Newcastle’s radar far longer than Pope like Hugo Ekitike, with whom yet more talks are planned this week.

But it seems that Newcastle have been able to do this deal far more swiftly, with Burnley keener to sell after their relegation.

Talks are at an advanced stage and it seems that Howe will have a new contender for his number one jersey ahead of pre-season.

Pope looks to be a clear upgrade on Martin Dubravka, offering more reliability, and just as much quality in terms of shot-stopping.

The Englishman did his utmost to keep Burnley in the top flight, with Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard saying he was ‘outstanding‘ in the penultimate game of the season.

He belongs in the Premier League and this looks like a good deal for Newcastle, rapidly agreed at a good price in a position where they need reinforcements.
