Report: Newcastle now plotting bid for player Shearer said 'actually stopped running' last season

Newcastle United have been linked with a summer swoop for Romelu Lukaku if they get into the Champions League.

Italian outlet CMW claim that the Magpies are eyeing up an elite striker if they remain in the top four for the remainder of the season.

Lukaku is currently on loan at Inter Milan from Chelsea, and the Italian club are interested in having him for at least another season.

But Chelsea would rather sell him, so if Inter try and organise another loan deal, alternative avenues out of Stamford Bridge may be explored.

Newcastle linked with Lukaku

Lukaku’s return to Chelsea did not go to plan last season and in one game, he had only seven touches against Crystal Palace.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer analysed that performance on Match of the Day and did not hold back in his assessment.

He said: “Just seven touches in the game is absolutely incredible and at times he’s not showing enough for the ball.

“He’s actually stopped running at times because the ball is not coming to him and there were numerous examples of that.”

“There’s no point in paying £97 million for a striker and not playing to his strengths.

“It’s very frustrating and I know what I would be doing at half-time or on the training ground. He’s got to demand the ball and make sure his team-mates are prepared to pass it to him.”

Lukaku also had a bit of a nightmare at the World Cup, coming off the bench in Belgium’s crucial final group game against Croatia but missing four second half chances which would have ensured qualification for the knockout rounds.

He was clearly struggling for fitness and Lukaku is the exact type of signing that Newcastle have so far avoided making since the takeover.

They have stayed away from high-earning, older players that elite clubs are trying to get rid of and when you add in the investment in Alexander Isak, it really would be a surprise if they went for Lukaku in the summer.
