Newcastle United will not be signing Manchester United defender, Marcos Rojo, after the player agreed a three-year deal to sign for Boca Juniors.

Reported by The Athletic, the Argentinian defender, 30, has reached an agreement to move back to his homeland with Boca. He brings his spell with Man United to an end, six months before the end of his contract.

Newcastle had been linked with a move for Rojo on loan. The Sun claimed in December that the Man United man was among the names being considered by Steve Bruce to improve his squad.

However, it looks like Newcastle have missed the boat on another player and January could well up being a poor one for them. The Magpies are struggling in the league, and have seen little activity with just three days of the window remaining.

Steve Bruce has made no secret of his desire to strengthen the ranks. But with funds tighter than ever, he could be left empty handed come Monday evening.

TBR View: Rojo always had heart set on South America it seems

Newcastle would have given Rojo the chance to really prove himself in the Premier League but as soon as the mentions of Boca came about, it was clear he had his heart set on that.

He’s never really got fully going for Man United. A £16m move not really paying off as those at Old Trafford would have liked.

For Newcastle, it’s back to the drawing board and all hands to the pump if they’re to make any signings in the coming days.
