The Daily Mail have claimed Newcastle United are interested in signing Benfica youngster Florentino Luis this summer after an excellent breakthrough campaign with the Portuguese outfit – days after being linked with Leeds United.
Luis, 20, has enjoyed a stunning campaign with the Portuguese giants, who sit in second place behind FC Porto behind two points after the Liga NOS returned last week. He watched on from the bench last week as Benfica failed to beat Portimonense.
The Portugal Under-21 cap has clocked up 29 senior appearances for Benfica, 15 of which have come this season. Indeed, Luis – nicknamed ‘O Polvo’ or ‘The Octopus’ because of his ability to cover ground – has played in the Champions League twice.
Newcastle have made an enquiry to sign Luis while AC Milan are looking to land the holding midfielder on loan, and then sign the youngster permanently for £35million. ESPN, meanwhile, claimed Leeds are also considering a move.
TBR’s view – Newcastle would be adding a European starlet
Indeed, Luis has thrown his name onto the shortlists of many European heavyweights given his age a number of excellent performances for Benfica. A move to England is on the cards, with both Manchester clubs also interested.
Can Newcastle attract him to Tyneside despite a lack of European football? Perhaps, given that he is more likely to get game time at the Toon than say, Pep Guardiola’s City. He has enormous potential, and needs game time to reach that potential.
