Newcastle United appointed Eddie Howe as their new manager but the search for a new technical director is still ongoing.

A director of football is one of the most important positions in world football today. Almost all clubs have one and if Newcastle want to be successful under their new owners, they will have to appoint an established name soon.

The likes of Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar have all been linked, but if reports from Spain are to be believed, the new Magpies owners have set their sights on the man in the Barcelona hot seat.

Marca claim that Newcastle have made contact with Ramon Planes.

Who is Newcastle-linked Ramon Planes?

Planes, 54, is highly respected in the footballing world, especially in Spain. He has been a sporting director for over two decades now, having started his career as a technical director at Spanish side CE L’Hospitalet.

He then took over Racing Santander, Deportivo Alaves and UE Lleida before accepting two jobs at Espanyol, first as a technical assistant, then as the sporting director of the Spanish side.

After a year at Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Planes returned to Spain and took charge of clubs like Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe before making the biggest move of his career to Barcelona in the summer of 2018.

Planes was first appointed as the director of professional football at Barca under Eric Abidal. He took over as the sporting director after the Frenchman left last summer.

During his time at the Camp Nou, Planes played a part in deals that saw Barcelona sign players like Antoine Griezmann, Sergio Aguero, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay among others.

The report claims that Planes has now told Barcelona he wants to leave the club. Newcastle have already made contact with him and he is on the list of options that the new Magpies owners are considering at the moment.
