Newcastle United have made contact over signing Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips this summer, the Athletic report.

Newcastle keen

Newcastle are known to be on the look out for a central defender and it seems that Phillips has cropped up on their radar.

The Liverpool man was promoted way beyond expectations last season, after Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered badly with injury.

Phillips ended up making his place in Liverpool’s backline his own though.

The rangy defender never looked out of place, with his aerial prowess a real asset for Klopp’s side.

Phillips actually ended up playing a key role for Liverpool as they gained a Champions League place, which led to Klopp waxing lyrical about the 24-year-old and calling him ‘unbelievable (Goal)’.

The problem for Phillips is that Liverpool now have all their defenders returning to fitness, which is set to knock him down the pecking order.

And it seems that Newcastle are now hoping to take advantage, with Liverpool looking to sell.

Can Newcastle afford it?

The Reds would apparently accept a deal worth £12 million to £15 million, but whether Newcastle could afford that sort of money remains to be seen.

Newcastle are limited on funds, and also want to sign Joe Willock this summer.

The appeal of signing Phillips is obvious though, as he could help to improve Newcastle’s backline.

While Phillips isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing player to watch, his robust style would make Newcastle tougher to break down, and in a deep defensive line he could really thrive due to his love of defending.
