Report: Newcastle made concrete offer to sign record-breaking striker, wanted him for one season only
Newcastle were willing to sign Cristiano Ronaldo for a season before allowing him to leave for Saudi Arabia, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The transfer guru has been speaking at length with Dutch outlet Soccer News ahead of the January transfer window.
Ronaldo will be the name on everyone’s lips next month, with the experienced forward now officially a free agent.
The 37-year-old was allowed to leave Manchester United after a public spat with manager Erik ten Hag.
Now, he’s available on a free transfer and Newcastle are one of the few clubs in the world that could match his wage demands.
The Magpies enjoyed a brilliant first half of 2022/23. They sit third in the Premier League and have genuine Champions League ambitions.
Di Marzio is a man with his finger on the pulse of lots of transfer deals. He believes that the Magpies eyed an astonishing swoop for Ronaldo.
He told Soccer News: “Cristiano wanted to stay in Europe, but he’s not received any concrete offers from European clubs.
“Only from Newcastle, but the idea was that he could play there until June, then go to Al-Nassr. But I think that deal is done.”
Newcastle willing to sign Ronaldo but it was never likely
If the player does want to stay in Europe he will want it to be at a truly massive club. With their new wealth, Newcastle could become that eventually but they’re not there yet.
Ronaldo is in limbo. It seems highly likely that Saudi Arabia will be his next destination and that seems a bit of a waster for a record-breaking player.
The Portugal captain has scored 701 goals during his career. He’s also claimed 223 assists and even at 37, he’d be a class signing.
Newcastle would dearly love such a stellar player. They have a plethora of young talent in their squad and perhaps Ronaldo would be perfect for their development.
Now, a deal looks unlikely though and for Newcastle, it’s back to the drawing board.
