Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that Newcastle United are looking to tie up a bargain deal for French midfielder Maxime Gonalons this summer.
The 30-year-old is somewhat out of favour at Roma. He spent last season on loan at La Liga side Sevilla, but the seven-time France international only managed 13 appearances for the Spanish outfit.
Newcastle are expected to make an offer for the central midfielder within the next few days, and it is believed a cut-price figure will be enough to entice Gonalons. He has two years remaining on his Roma contract.
A Lyon legend, Gonalons clocked up 334 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants. It comes at the same time that Le Progres have claimed that former Lyon manager Bruno Genesio is in talks with Newcastle.
Mo Diame has left the club this summer, while Isaac Hayden is desperate to leave once again in order to be closer to his family. Sean Longstaff is being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.
TBR’s view – Gonalons a decent Newcastle addition
Perhaps not the most exciting signing for Newcastle, but the squad needs an overhaul this summer. It needs additions in the middle of the park, a striker, additions out wide and even at left-back.
With multiple positions in need of repair, fans cannot expect the club to spend huge money on seven or eight players. A balance is required and being able to pick up quality on the cheap, like Gonalons, benefits Newcastle.
It allows them to spend big on other, more important areas – such as a new striker and the replacing of Ayoze Perez.
