Report: Newcastle line up swoop for £15m PL player who's 'getting better all the time'

Newcastle United have been busy in the January transfer window as they look to bolster their ranks.

The Magpies have already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, and are reportedly in talks over Diego Carlos.

However, there’s still scope for Newcastle to bring in more players in several key positions.

According to 90Min, Eddie Howe is eager to bring in a new left-back in the January transfer window.

The outlet claims that, as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker, Aston Villa’s Matt Targett is on Newcastle’s radar.

Targett may be available after Villa brought Lucas Digne to Birmingham, suggested 90Min.

The 26-year-old has been a regular for his club, making 17 Premier League appearances this season.

Targett has made 89 appearances for Villa since his £15million move from Southampton in 2019.

However, he lost his place to Lucas Digne against Manchester United, having to make do with a place on the bench.

In March last year, The Mirror reported that England manager Gareth Southgate was considering Targett for the squad.

He subsequently signed a new Villa contract in April, taking him to the summer of 2025.

Targett played in every Premier League game during the 2020-21 campaign, helping the team to keep 15 clean sheets.

His form earned him the Players’ Player of the Year award.

“Matt’s having a fantastic season – his consistency has been great,” Dean Smith said following his display against Leeds in February 2021.

“He’s getting better all of the time. He’s been one of our stand-out players this season.”

Targett is just the kind of player Newcastle need at this moment in time.

He knows the Premier League inside out, has experience of fighting relegation, is highly rated at Villa and clearly has talent.

Whether Villa will let him go is another question, however – he’s likely to push Digne all the way for that left-back berth.
