Football website 90Min have claimed that Newcastle United are confident they are leading the race to sign free agent Jeff Hendrick this summer, ahead of Everton, Southampton and six other European sides.
Hendrick, 28, became a free agent earlier in the summer after his contract at Burnley came to an end. He played 139 times for Burnley, 122 of which came in the Premier League – and boasts 54 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Numerous clubs have been linked with a move for Hendrick, though the Toon’s interest has been strong for some time. Now, the website claims nine clubs are interested in total – but that Newcastle are confident of winning the race.
The Toon are of the opinion that they are beating Premier League sides Everton, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion – as well as European clubs AC Milan, Marseille, Atalanta and Lille.
TBR’s view – Hendrick a good buy on a free
Newcastle need central midfielders. Reports claim Nabil Bentaleb could be signed for a cheaper fee than originally believed, but he struggled while on loan from Schalke. Matty Longstaff’s future remains up in the air, after his contract expired.
It leaves Newcastle with just Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff in midfield and landing a player like Hendrick – who is a bit more forward thinking than the aforementioned names – would add much-needed cover. A no-brainer, on a free.
