Report: Newcastle launch £33m bid for 'the most underrated centre-back in European football'
Newcastle United have launched a fresh, improved bid for Diego Carlos, according to 90Min.
The outlet claims the Magpies opened with an offer of just under £30million, which Sevilla turned down.
Now, Newcastle have reportedly come back with a £33million bid in hope of landing Carlos.
However, 90Min claims the Spanish outfit wants in excess of £40million for the Brazilian.
That said, Newcastle appear to have received a boost in that Carlos is apparently open to joining the Magpies this month.
Sevilla are flying high in La Liga, sitting second in the table and boasting an incredible centre-back partnership in Carlos and Jules Kounde.
Predictably, they don’t want to split this partnership up mid-season with so much at stake.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have concerns of their own at the opposite end of the table, battling Premier League relegation.
If the Magpies can land the 28-year-old, they’d have a truly world-class defender at their disposal.
Can Newcastle land “dynamic, intense, fast” defender?
In 2019-20, Sevilla won the Europa League, beating Manchester United along the way in the semi-final.
Owen Hargreaves told BT Sport: “I think Sevilla have the best centre-back, the most underrated centre-back, in European football in Diego Carlos.
“I think he is a fabulous player, Brazilian, (then) 27, is rugged, can compete, really good player.
“I think after this game everyone’s going to: ‘How come Chelsea or Arsenal don’t sign these players?’.”
Last year, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was reportedly eyeing Carlos.
And Fabiano Soares, his former coach at Estoril, also sung his praises, in conversation with ESPN Brasil.
“He is very fast. That is why Klopp should keep an eye on him,” he said.
“He is a dynamic, intense, fast player.”
